How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Road Trip
Before a long drive, most people ask the same question: how much will the fuel cost? The answer depends on three things you already know, which are the distance, your car’s mileage and the price of fuel. Put them together and you get a reliable estimate in seconds. In this guide, you’ll see the formula, a worked example with real figures, and the things that quietly push your fuel bill up. Try the calculator below with your own trip first.
Enter your trip distance, your car’s mileage and the fuel price. Tick round trip or add passengers to split the cost.

The fuel cost formula
Trip fuel cost needs two small calculations.
Fuel needed (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/l)
Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre
So a car that gives 15 km/l uses one litre for every 15 km. If you drive 150 km, you need 10 litres. Multiply that by the price per litre and you have your cost.
For a round trip, double the distance. To share the cost, divide the total by the number of people in the car. The calculator above does all of this for you, including the cost per kilometre, which is useful for comparing cars or trips.
Use your real-world mileage, not the figure on the brochure. If you don’t know it, our mileage calculator shows you how to measure it in one tank.
Worked example: a 250 km trip
Say you drive 250 km each way in a car that gives 15 km/l, with petrol at ₹100 per litre.
- Fuel needed: 250 ÷ 15 = 16.67 litres
- Fuel cost one way: 16.67 × 100 = ₹1,667
- Cost per km: ₹6.67
- Round trip (500 km): 33.3 litres, ₹3,333
- Split between 4 people: ₹417 each one way, or ₹833 each for the round trip
How much does mileage change the cost?
Same 250 km trip, same ₹100 price, different mileage:
| Mileage | Fuel needed | Trip cost |
|---|---|---|
| 10 km/l | 25.0 litres | ₹2,500 |
| 12 km/l | 20.8 litres | ₹2,083 |
| 15 km/l | 16.7 litres | ₹1,667 |
| 18 km/l | 13.9 litres | ₹1,389 |
| 20 km/l | 12.5 litres | ₹1,250 |
A car at 20 km/l costs half as much to drive as one at 10 km/l. Over a year, that gap adds up to a lot.
How much does fuel price change the cost?
Same trip at 15 km/l:
| Fuel price | Trip cost |
|---|---|
| ₹95 | ₹1,583 |
| ₹100 | ₹1,667 |
| ₹105 | ₹1,750 |
| ₹110 | ₹1,833 |
A ₹5 rise in price adds about ₹83 to this trip. It looks small, but it repeats on every journey.
What affects your fuel cost
Driving speed. Cars are usually most efficient at moderate, steady speeds. Fast driving and hard acceleration use noticeably more fuel.
Traffic and stop-start driving. City traffic lowers mileage because the engine keeps accelerating from a stop. Highway cruising is usually more efficient.
Air conditioning. Running the AC increases fuel use, especially in slow traffic and hot weather. The effect varies by car and conditions.
Tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres create more resistance, so the engine works harder. Check the pressure at least once a month.
Load and roof racks. Extra weight and anything on the roof increase consumption.
Vehicle condition. A dirty air filter, worn spark plugs or overdue servicing can reduce mileage.
Terrain. Hills use more fuel than flat roads.
8 ways to cut your fuel cost
- Keep your tyres at the recommended pressure. The correct figure is in the owner’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door.
- Drive smoothly. Accelerate gently, look ahead and brake early.
- Avoid long idling. If you’ll be stopped for more than a minute or so, switch the engine off where it’s safe.
- Remove unnecessary weight. Take out things you don’t need to carry.
- Plan your route. Pick the route with less traffic and fewer stops, even if it is slightly longer.
- Service your car on time. Clean filters and fresh oil help the engine run efficiently.
- Use the AC wisely. At lower speeds, open windows can be enough. At highway speed, the AC is usually the better choice.
- Combine errands. One longer trip uses less fuel than several short ones, because a cold engine is less effi
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fuel cost per kilometre?
Divide the fuel price by your mileage. At ₹100 per litre and 15 km/l, the cost is 100 ÷ 15 = ₹6.67 per km.
Does AC really use more fuel?
Yes, the AC compressor draws power from the engine, so consumption rises. The increase is usually larger in city traffic and extreme heat than on the highway.
Is petrol or diesel cheaper for a long trip?
Diesel cars usually give better mileage, and diesel is sometimes priced lower, so the fuel cost per km is often lower. But diesel cars often cost more to buy, so it depends on how far you drive in a year. Use our total cost of ownership calculator to compare.
Why is my actual fuel bill higher than the estimate?
The calculator uses the mileage you enter. If you used the brochure figure, real mileage is usually lower. Traffic, speed, AC and load also add to consumption.
How can I find my real mileage?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill. Divide the kilometres driven by the litres you added. Our mileage calculator does this for you.
Should I include toll and parking costs?
The calculator covers fuel only. For a full trip budget, add tolls, parking and any overnight costs separately.
